When it comes to enjoying a drink, it’s important to know what a standard alcoholic drink is. In Australia, a standard drink contains approximately 10 grams of pure alcohol (Ethanol), which is roughly equivalent to:

• 1 mid-strength beer (about 375ml, with an alcohol volume of around 4.5%)
• 1 glass of wine (a standard serving of 100ml at about 12% alcohol)
• 1 shot of spirits (30ml, like vodka or whisky, with an alcohol content around 40%)

This knowledge helps you keep track of your consumption while enjoying social events responsibly.  Always drink responsibly and be mindful of your limits.

To calculate the number of standard drinks in your homemade wine, the formula is volume of bottle in litres x %abv x 0.789 (specific gravity of ethanol)

For example a 750ml bottle of wine with 12.5 % abv the formula is 0.75 x 12.5 x 0.789 = 7.4 Standard drinks (rounded up) 

Make up a 10% solution of Sodium or Potassium Metabisulphite. (e.g. 10g of SMS/PMS and make up to 100 ml volume with  water, or 100g per litre of water)

 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of this solution is equivalent to 1 Campden Tablet

Also, as a rough guide,  if you are treating bulk wine volumes to stabilise the wine, double the number of litres you are treating and add that number of millilitres of sulphite solution to your demijohn or similar vessel. (e.g. for 20L of wine add 40ml of 10% solution)
